Officially known as Australian football, it is a form of football played with 18 players for each opposing team and in a modified cricket field or an Australian rules football venue. In FIFA football you can only use your feet, legs, knees, head and torso. This is not the case in footy as it is called in some regions where all parts of the body can be used to move the ball. Like the rugby or the more popular American football, this is a full contact sport. It is also a major spectator sport in Australia.
AFL Australian Rules Football, since it has been also called reference to Australian football league, is a sport in which you kick the ball and any player in the field can catch it. The field in which the game is played is elliptical in shape, same as the ball being used in the game, looking like the standard ball used in the NFL.
With few rules they go about it sometimes by just sheer force. I mean have you seen guys pile up when a player gets to catch a ball after it has been kicked high up the air? If that was me I could possibly die just by the weight of the ones on top of me, what more a dozen or more. Some even jump over you even if they know that the tackle was over just for the fun of it. Inflicting pain and watching this sort of gladiator games have been a pastime of people for centuries. No wonder I love them.
I assume that in order to play AFL Australian Rules Football, a type of physical sport, you have to be exceedingly fit and very well built as the game does not allow use of body armor or any helmet of sort. This sometimes lead to very serious injuries but is still played even though the dangers are there. In this case I can say people who play this game have iron hides and battering rams as heads.
The game has this sort of jump ball like the one found in basket ball where two of the tallest guys in the team battle to get possession of a tossed ball as it comes falling back to the ground. These guys are called ruckmen.
This game also has a reputation of having large scores compared to baseball or other sports. AFL Australian Rules Football has poles serving as goals in which the players have to kick the ball past the goal posts. With varying goal points depending on the type of goal scored and the ease of scoring makes high scores a reality and this is good for fan based games. I myself don’t favor games which provide little opportunities for goals.
Last but not least, AFL will never mean the same for you after reading this article of course. But bear in mind this unique game from Australia exists and will most surely be here for a long time.
